Belvoir Castle hosts filming of popular Netflix political thriller

Two local stately homes were used for filming a popular Netflix drama which has just aired.

Belvoir Castle and Burghley House doubled as Windsor Castle for scenes in season four of The Diplomat, which stars Emmy-nominated Keri Russell, Allison Janney and Rufus Sewell.

It tells the story of a veteran US diplomat who is unexpectedly appointed as the ambassador to the United Kingdom amid an emerging international crisis.

At the start of the latest season, the motorcade for the US President and Vice-President is diverted to Windsor because of security concerns.

On it’s involvements in the show, Belvoir Castle posted on its Facebook page: “If a certain room looked familiar, that’s because the Elizabeth Saloon at Belvoir Castle plays Windsor Castle in the series.

“To the eagle-eyed locals who spotted the film crews here at the start of the year: this is what it was all for.”

When the motorcade arrives at Windsor Castle, locals will recognise Burghley House at Stamford, which was used for exterior scenes.

Filming at Burghley took place this spring with spectacular scenes of the US Presidential convoy travelling through the parkland en route to a major political gathering inside Burghley’s North Court.

The drama also features top actors Aidan Turner, Celia Imrie, Bradley Whitford and Rory Kinnear.

Belvoir Castle is currently closed to the public but it is due to reopen its doors for its popular Christmas season on November 14 – go to
