The Lakes course greens were a little unpredictable following their final preparation for the winter and the overall scoring reflected this.

Winston, who plays off a 22 handicap, started steadily, but had a wobble in the middle of his round on 9, 10 and 11 before finishing strongly with a birdie on the 17th to compile 32 points.

He just pipped Dave Copley to first position on countback when Dave failed to score on the final hole. Third place, on 31 points, went to Graham Smith after another steady round.

* On Saturday, the Greetham men’s and ladies’ sections played the last stableford qualifier of the season on the Valley course.

Kind conditions helped good scoring with Darren Haughton winning the men’s competition with 40 points on countback from Wilby Toothill.

Ben Millier was a point further back in third.

In the ladies’ section the top positions all went to low handicappers with the overall winner being Emma Tipping (1) with 34 points.

Second place went to Liz Haughton (5) with 32 points, despite an erratic front nine, and Sophie Beardsall (2) was third with 31.

* The seniors had a choice of playing the greensomes or gruesomes format on Monday and, unsurprisingly, the higher scores came in the greensomes format.

Overall winners David Aldred and Peter Larter pipped Mike Hoye and Mike Maffei on countback with 39 points.
