Although he paid for some of his shopping, officers suspected that he was hiding other items.

"When challenged by officers, the male decided his best option was to enter an impromptu sprinting competition," said Melton Police.

"Unfortunately for him, he hadn't checked the opposition. After a brief but enthusiastic attempt at escape, he quickly discovered that three police officers were more than up for the challenge.

"The pursuit was short-lived, the male was detained, and his athletics career came to an abrupt end."

The man will now appear in court at a future date.

Melton Police added: "This incident highlights the value of proactive patrols and partnership working in tackling shop theft and keeping our communities safe. It also serves as a reminder that running away rarely improves your situation when police officers are already on the scene!

"Thank you to everyone who continues to engage with us and report concerns within the community."

The Safer Streets Team in Melton Mowbray - a network of representatives of Melton Borough Council's Safer Communities Team, Leicestershire Police, and the Safer Melton Partnership - has helped apprehend offenders, including shoplifters.

Funding of £3,000 from Partnership and Melton BID last year enabled dozens of new radios to be bought for businesses allowing them to flag up individuals and incidents in real time.
