Stoke Rochford golf: Ladies team defeat Melton in season opener

The first competitions of the season have received excellent support from the ladies at Stoke Rochford Golf Club.

The first trophy played for was the Early Birds, a stableford won by Avis Griffin with a total of 33 points.

* The Hi Lo competition, which features a low handicapper drawn with a higher handicapper and played as a greensome stableford, resulted in a win for Pauline Haggerty and Mags McArthur with 37 points.

June Miller won the stableford with 35 points as the competition raised more than £130 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

* Stoke ladies hosted Melton Mowbray in the first match of the season and ran out 2-1 winners.

There were convincing wins for Sheila Dugmore and Elaine Kirby (5 and 3), as well as Carol Hamilton and Mags McArthur (6 and 5), while Joan Lennard and Roni Proctor lost 3 and 2.

* The medal played earlier this month was won by Judy Rawson with nett 71, four strokes ahead of runner-up Pauline Haggerty.

Sue Booth was third with nett 77 and the best gross prize went to Avis Griffin after a round of 89.
