Slow start is costly for Melton Town

Melton Town suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat to promotion-chasing Newark Town in their first fixture in five weeks, with a slow start ultimately proving costly.
The hosts began the match on the front foot while Melton struggled to find their rhythm early on. Newark created their first opportunity in the eighth minute when a high ball into the six-yard box saw Harry Allcock challenge goalkeeper Jake Alley. Alley spilled the ball under pressure and Ryan Rushden reacted quickest to tap into an empty net, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Newark did not have to wait long to make their pressure count. Just four minutes later, Rushden received the ball on the edge of the penalty area with his back to goal. Turning Jordan Wakeling sharply, he unleashed an excellent strike that flew into the top corner to give the hosts the lead.
The home side nearly doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when a defensive clearance struck Toby Fura and rebounded kindly into the path of Tristan Drummond. Clear on goal but from a tight angle, Drummond could only find the side netting.
Moments later, another Melton clearance ricocheted off a defender and sent Rushden through on goal once again, but this time Alley reacted well to make the save.
Melton gradually grew into the game and began to dominate possession, creating their best opportunity around the half-hour mark. Ryan Calver collected the ball near the touchline, cut inside Brad McGregor and delivered a pass to Jack Butterfill near the six-yard box. Butterfill’s touch took the ball past the goalkeeper and beyond the far post, but Andre Williams kept it alive and laid it off for Tom Wakley, whose effort drifted inches wide.
Williams came close again minutes later with a strike from the edge of the area that skimmed the crossbar.
Right before half-time Newark almost extended their lead when a corner found Nelson Aideyan unmarked, but his header drifted just over the bar.
The defender threatened again shortly after the restart when a free-kick delivery into the box was met by his header, which once more cleared the crossbar.
Melton continued to push forward. Butterfill produced a strong run down the side of the penalty area before slipping a pass to Calver, who beat Aideyan for pace and fired in a shot that required a strong save from Scott Loach.
At the other end, Allcock struck from the edge of the area but Alley produced a diving save to keep Melton in the contest.
Just after the hour mark, the visitors came agonisingly close to an equaliser. A long ball found Butterfill on the edge of the area, and although he was outmuscled by the goalkeeper, Ezekiel Danso reacted quickly to chip Loach, only to see the ball drop just the wrong side of the crossbar.
