Hamilton Tennis Club: Club championships under way

Hamilton Tennis Club started their club championships last week with the first round for lower-ranked players.

The mixed doubles had the largest entry, with the top two pairs from each group advancing to the semi-finals.

These were closely contested and Chris Hirst and Graham Brown saw off Jo Draper-Moore and Steve Plaistow, while Jan Jackson and Tom Styles won 5-4 against Graham Hall and Chris Stevens.

The final saw Jan and Tom win 5-4 against Chris and Graham, and both pairs will qualify for the second week of matches.

With fewer entries in the other categories, the top two pairs from the group contested the final.

Keith Galloway and Stuart Posnett won 7-6 on a tie-break against Joe Cunningham and Steve Plaistow to claim the men’s doubles, and Linda Hallam and Nikki Newman beat Suzan Galloway and Karen Walker 5-3 in the ladies’ doubles.

The men’s singles was completed in the rain and Nathan Morgans, who had been unbeaten in the group rounds, confirmed his superiority by defeating Graham Brown 5-2 in the final.

The ladies’ singles saw Jan Jackson beat Suzan Galloway 6-0, 6-3.

* On the league scene, Hamilton’s second mixed team of Craig Tracey and Jessi Jackson, Ciaran Boylan and Sue Corfield, and Doug Hacking with Margaret Roskell clinched promotion with a 7-2 win over Oadby Granville Thirds.

Craig and Jessi led the team with a maximum three sets, while the other two pairs won two each.

Other members who made a big contribution towards topping the table were Margaret Shufflebotham, Andy Stevens, Penny Hallam, Jimmi Cox and Will Harrison.
