Survival hopes remain alive after shock win

A big innings from Tew and Funnell helped Barkby United keep their survival hopes alive with a shock victory at Barrow Town on Saturday.

Barkby were put in to bat by the home side and they lost their first wicket when Hollis was caught and bowled by Shipman for four with only 20 runs on the board.

Wood played some nice shots in his 27 before he was caught with the score on 51, but a key 66-run third wicket partnership by Funnell and Tew gave the visitors hope.

Funnell went for one big hit too many against spinner Afzal and was caught on the boundary for 47 before Flowers joined Tew, but was stumped when he danced down the wicket to Afzal for 12.

Tew’s innings of 49 came to an end when he was caught off Afzal, but Silver and Louis Botting took the score to 191 before Botting was caught for 20.

Silver and Morris took the Barkby score to 206-6 from their 50 overs.

The home side started their reply well with openers Kara and Patel putting on 51 in only seven overs before Louis Botting had Patel caught by Sharp for 29.

Morris came into the attack and took the wickets of Nightingale and Pedrola to leave Barrow on 89 -3.

The hard-hitting Kara and Salgotra continued to score at a brisk pace and put on 61 for the fourth wicket, when spinners Sharp and Dave Botting came into the attack the game changed completely as Sharp had Kara caught by Wood for 73.

Botting then bowled Salgotra and Avtar to leave Barrow on 163-6 but with 27 overs still available Barrow looked the likely winners.

Botting took his third wicket when he bowled Chanditha for 14 and Sharp then had Dansuclal brilliantly caught by Flowers.

Botting collect took wicket number four when he caught and bowled Afzal for a duck and Barkby’s victory was completed when Sharp bowled Shipman in the 30th over the home side being all out for 185.

Dave Botting finished with figures of 8-0-53-4 , with A Morric (2-25), C Sharp (3-22) and Louis Botting (1-44) also taking wickets.

The 21-run victory means Barkby need to take a total of 11 points from their last two matches to guarantee Leicestershire & Rutlands Premier League cricket next season.

Barkby travel to play Uppingham on Saturday with a 12pm start before wrapping up their campaign by hosting Uppingham the following week.

The second XI are at home this Saturday against Ashby Hastings with a 12.30pm start.
