County League: Barkby United CC collapse hands Syston derby victory

Syston Town won the bragging rights over their local rivals with a 13-run victory in the County League Premier on Saturday.

Yet the 12 points Barkby earned from a close-fought game may be vital in their battle to survive in the top flight for another season.

Syston won the toss and decided to bat, but lost an early wicket when Royle was caught by Flowers, off Waplington, with the score on seven.

The second wicket went down when Jarwaal was caught by Smith, off Botting, (39), but Ghuman and Wootton then put on 97 for the third wicket before Sharp trapped Wootton (37) leg before.

Three runs later Sharp had Ghuman caught behind by Troop for 54 as the visitors lost regular wickets, with only Mo Pardesi (25) offering any major resistance down the order, as Syston’s innings closed on 221-9.

Barkby lost Botting in the second over with the score on four, but Troop and Funnell then took the score to 52 when Funnell was LBW to Jarwaal for 32.

Flowers and Troop added 79 for the third wicket before Pardesi had Troop caught and bowled for 35.

And without any addition to the score Silver was LBW to Pardesi leaving Barkby well placed on 131-4.

Harby struck two sixes in his 21 before he was caught and bowled by Pardesi, and Barkby’s hopes of victory went with the dismissal of Steve Flowers who was caught by Drake, off Ghuman, for a fine 75.

From this point Barkby collapsed to 208 all out as Ghuman finished with fine figures of 4 for 10.

Syston move up to seventh, while Barkby stay ninth, 31 points above the relegation places.

Barkby are at home to title contenders Lutterworth on Saturday with a noon start.
