Police stop 25 Melton drivers not wearing seatbelts in just two hours

Those shocking figures were revealed by Leicestershire Police following the latest Fatal4 clampdown on Wilton Road.

Officers issued traffic offence reports to 25 drivers for not wearing a seat belt while they monitored the road between 9.30am and 11.30am.

One motorist was dealt with in the same way for using a mobile phone at the wheel and others were spoken to about miscellaneous road traffic offences.

Graham Compton, a senior traffic management officer with the county force, told the Melton Times: “We were busy at the Fatal4 operation in Melton Mowbray town centre today.

“Despite all our efforts to educate drivers of the dangers of the Fatal4 a minority refuse to heed our advice.”

The seatbelt results were much worse than the previous police operation on Wilton Road, in April this year, when seven such offences were detected and six drivers were using a mobile phone.

The Fatal4 offences - speeding, not wearing seatbelts, using mobile phones and drink/drug driving - are those which lead most commonly to road collisions.

Offences detected this year in Fatal4 operations across the Leicestershire force area prior to today’s Melton deployment were 249 not wearing a seatbelt, 40 using a mobile phone, 120 speeding and five drink/drug-driving.
