An impressive 99.2 per cent of patients said they would recommend the practice to other people, in figures released by NHS Choices, the official website of the National Health Service in England.

It received overwhelmingly the best rating among GP surgeries within an eight-mile radius of Melton in the GP Patient Survey, which is sent out twice a year to patients.

A delighted Sue Timberlake, group practice manager at Long Clawson Surgery, puts the highly positive appraisal down to how easy it is for patients to arrange to see a clinician on the day they request one.

She said: “The results of the survey bear testament to the hard work of all of our practice staff.

“The access at Long Clawson is fantastic - patients don’t have to wait to see a clinician.

“It’s great for mums with children, for example, for them to be seen on the same day as they make an appointment.

“We also do extended hours on a Saturday, between 8am and 12.30pm, which works very well for patients.”

The surgery at Long Clawson, which has two partners, five salaried GPs and an advanced clinical practitioner, treats 6,500 patients in the Vale of Belvoir.

Mrs Timberlake added: “We are quite a unique practice in that we still want to give that traditional feel of a rural country practice while also using the latest medical equipment and treatments.”

The Long Clawson service is part of The Vale Medical Group, which is also includes The Stackyard Surgery at Croxton Kerrial and Woolsthorpe Surgery at Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir.

Stackyard had a 93.3 per cent rating when it came to patients who would recommend the practice while Woolsthorpe scored an excellent 96.2 per cent, second only to Long Clawson in the local league table.

Survey results for other GP surgeries in the borough: Dr J L Harris & Partners (Latham House in Melton Mowbray and Regency Road, Asfordby) 86.3 per cent; 4) Market Overton and Somerby Surgeries (Oakham Road, Somerby and Church Lane, Wymondham and The Surgery Thistleton Road, Market Overton) 84.3 per cent; Welby Practice (Bescaby Lane, Waltham) 70.6 per cent.
