This year some 400 parcels were delivered, made up from foodstuffs provided by the four main sponsors plus donations from shoppers during collections at Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

It took three days to collect the tinned and packaged items, prepare the parcels and then deliver them to individual households.

“Unfortunately we had to do this during the cold snap when we had snow, and several volunteers walked in to town to make sure there were no hold-ups. So hats off to them,” said a spokesman for the charities.

The annual effort was sponsored jointly by Melton Lions, the Rotary Club of Melton, Melton Belvoir Rotary and the WC Barnes Trust.
