Multiple fire crews tackle large warehouse fire at Melton Airfield

Multiple fire crews were deployed to the scene of a blaze in a large warehouse on the Melton Airfield site last night (Monday).

Residents reported hearing ‘two loud bangs’ at the time of the incident and others heard the sound of sirens as 10 fire engines responded to the emergency.

Police officers closed Dalby Road as firefighters dealt with the incident and local people were advised to keep doors and windows closed because of the thick smoke in the air.

Fire crews remain on site in the aftermath of the large scale blaze.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service told the Melton Times this morning: “We were called to a warehouse fire at Anglo Adhesives on Dalby Road, Melton Mowbray at 8.13pm yesterday evening.

"Ten fire appliances, plus our aerial ladder and turntable ladder platforms, were sent to the incident due to the extent of the developing blaze.

“The warehouse was two storeys high and 25m by 50m and was known to contain a large quantity of combustible liquids and other potentially dangerous chemicals.

“Two water carriers were also sent to provide additional capacity for our crews, who worked throughout the night trying to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

“This remains an ongoing incident, with several crews still in attendance. The cause of the fire is not yet known.”

Police officers are also in attendance and keeping the public away from the area.

Leicestershire Police said in a statement last night: “A road closure was put in place at 9.30pm on Dalby Road in Melton Mowbray.

“The road is closed as emergency services deal with a fire.

“Please avoid the area.

“Local residents are advised to keep their doors and widows closed.”

Crews attended from the fire stations at Billesdon, Birstall, Central (Leicester), Eastern (Leicester), Loughborough and Oakham, as well as Melton Mowbray.

Dalby Road reopened to traffic late on Monday night after fire crews got control of the blaze.
