How you can save yourself money when you're doing the laundry

I was recently talking on a podcast about how to do laundry cheaply – how do we make sure that simply washing clothes does not cost us a fortune?

Twenty minutes later, we had come up with some fab discussions on the topic!

Filling the washing machine to three-quarters full, instead of just placing a few items in for a load, will give you greater efficiency.

Tumble dryers have been deemed the household appliance that uses the most electricity.

Although some machines can use less nowadays, do you class a tumble dryer as a luxury or essential item?

I know people that say they cannot live without one and someone who uses one because her husband does not like to see washing hung out!

My internal budgeting buttons are being firmly pressed on this one.

Personally, I feel there is nothing more refreshing than seeing washing on a line outside, as well as the smell and using free energy in the sun.

It can be difficult if you don’t have any outside space to dry clothes and mould and dampness can occur, so windows need to be open and use the room with the most space to dry clothes.

We all tend to have our certain products we like to use: Persil, Ariel or, perhaps, a supermarket brand's own?

If we succumbed to buy everything advertising tells us that we ‘need’ to wash our clothes, it would soon rack up to a fortune which most of us could not afford.

Some products can have harmful effects on a machine’s lifespan too, costing us more in the long run.

How many people iron clothes nowadays?

Recent discussions told us that as more cheaply made clothes contain plastics (and you can buy iron-free shirts!) that ironing is a pastime that is dying out.

Irons are also an expensive household product if you are trying to keep the electricity bill down.

All these little changes, and taking 10 minutes to reassess how you do your laundry, all help the pennies stay in your pocket and not someone else’s, which is our goal, right?
