Village school launches appeal to preserve historic feature

An appeal has been launched to help pay for critical repairs for a historic village feature which has been there for nearly 200 years.

The eyes of Somerby residents and visitors are often drawn to the historic bell tower at the village primary school, a grade two listed structure which has been there since 1837.

Unfortunately, a recent professional assessment has shown that it is now in a ‘critical state of disrepair’ and it requires significant rebuilding to ensure the safety of children, staff and families.

Scaffolding is in place now but complex and costly renovation is required in line with strict conservation standards.

Funding for the school, which is part of Mowbray Education Trust, is prioritised for teaching and learning so additional support is now needed to help preserve this important part of its heritage.

To ensure the project can be carried out, the school and trust are appealing for help from the community through donations, fundraising and sponsorship.

Andrea Brown, headteacher at Somerby Primary School, said: "Our bell tower is a special part of our school’s history and identity.

"We are keen to preserve it for future generations, and we are grateful for any support the community can offer.”

And Louise Lee, the CEO at Mowbray Education Trust, added: “Somerby Primary School is a real heart of its community.

"This is a treasured local landmark, and we care deeply about ensuring it is protected.

"We hope people will rally around the school to help make that possible.”

Call the school office on 01664 50488 if you would like to help the fundraising campaign.
