It ceased trading as a hotel in October 2024 due to ‘adverse trading conditions and the financial position of the operating company’ after previously establishing a good reputation weddings, fine dining, spa breaks and events.

The sudden closure left several brides-to-be heartbroken due to the loss of their wedding venue and members were shocked to told via email that their memberships had been terminated with no refunds possible.

The Gretton family owned it for almost 100 years up to the 1980s before American restaurateur Bob Payton took it over in 1986 and another previous owner was the British entrepreneur, Peter de Savary.

The property is being marketed by Strutt & Parker with features such as a wellness centre with seven treatment rooms, a purpose-built pavilion with changing rooms and catering facilities, four cottages, four tennis courts and landscaped gardens and grounds.

It is understood the country house is being offered as the venue for a new hotel business, an exclusive members’ club or as a private house.

A grade one listed building, Stapleford Park boasts a selection of impressive state rooms, two commercial kitchens and Stableyard built in 1899 which now forms a courtyard most recently used as a gym and spa.

There is also an indoor swimming pool, which was added during Mr de Savary’s ownership, with a sauna, jacuzzi and steam room.

The pavilion was used as the clubhouse for the 18-hole former Stapleford Park Golf Club, which closed in 2020 due to declining membership.

The now de-consecrated Church of St Mary Magdalene is also contained in the grounds but it does not form part of the sale.

Among the famous recent events at the country house was the 25th birthday party of Azim, Prince of Brunei, in 2007, when singing legend Michael Jackson was a guest.

Members of Guns N’ Roses stayed there in 2018, while they were headlining Download Festival, and the 2011 wedding of footballer Peter Crouch and model Abbey Clancy there attracted a host of A-list guests.
