Mixed Leagues underway for Melton Tennis Club teams

With Melton Mowbray Tennis Clubs Men’s and Ladies Summer doubles leagues being finalised the club’s mixed team’s got their league matches underway.

The Mixed first team got their Division 1A fixtures off with a solid 7-2 win at Lutterworth, a team expected to challenge for the league honours.

Sarah Wright teamed up with the ever improving teenager Harrison Culpan at first pair and they notched a fine maximum three wins for just the loss of two games.

Skipper and county captain Charlie Griffin partnered another promising youngster Zev Dewshi at number two and they also claimed a maximum for just the loss of five games.

Giles Constant and Sarah Medcalf came into the team at late notice but performed superbly to snatch a rubber after a tense tie break and were also unlucky to lose out on another tie break set.

The second team travelled to play a young Wigston team and just lost out by a narrow 5-4 margin in their Division 1B opener.

With last minute illness and injury the team travelled with just two pairs and they both collected two wins apiece.

The Mixed third team travelled for a tough Division 4B fixture and performed superbly to take the points with a 6-3 win.

Number one pair Carol Gilchrist and Liam Morrison paved the way with a superb maximum three wins with second pairing of  skipper Sarah Medcalf and Mark Ashman weighing in with two vital rubbers and debutant pairing of Alexia Agrafioti and Barry Gill winning a vital rubber after a tense tie break.

The Men’s first team rounded off their Division One fixtures with a disappointing 8-1 reversal when they travelled to Market Bosworth.

With skipper Ryan Parmar on holiday and injuries taking their toll the team were reduced to two pairs with teenagers Harrison Culpan and Zev Dewshi collecting the club’s solitary win.

The Men’s Vet’s O40 team travelled to Birstall Watermead for their Division 3A fixture and notched a super 6-2 win that keeps them well in the promotion race.

Skipper Mark Ashman was able to draft in Justin Horobin to partner him and they duly notched four wins to set up the win at first pair.

Rob Grant came in to partner ever present Craig Tracey at second pairing and they weighed in with two wins to ensured Melton took the points.

The Ladies Vet’s team completed their Division 3B fixtures when they travelled to play a strong David Lloyd III team and were well beaten by an 8-0 scoreline which leaves them in a fourth place finish with 25 points and the league title and promotion going to Hinckley Town with 49 points.
