Hatherley firstStrider home afterfine fells debut

FIVE Stilton Striders took to the hills in the Peak District last week to run in the Calton Fell Race.

In perfect weather conditions, runners set out on the 5.25-mile course which contained 800ft of tough climbs. They headed up onto Calton Moor and then onto the Trig Point on top of Calton Hill before an undulating trip back to the finish.

First Strider in was Jim Hatherley in a terrific run in his first-ever fell race, finishing 11th in 40min 36secs. Not far behind, and also in his first fell race, was Ian Johnson who was 19th in 41.39.

There was a slight gap then to Neil Jaggard, 53rd in 46.52, while Mike Brighty, another debutant, found the mighty hill tough going but was pleased with his 68th place in 48.40.

The final Strider in the field of 112 runners was Ian Mason who finished 88th in 52.47. Race winner was 18-year-old England international Jack Ross in an incredible 33 minutes dead.
