Pacesetting Asfordby Amateurs girls record seventh straight win

Asfordby Under 12s Girls made it seven wins from seven against AFC Leicester to open up an eight-point gap at the top of their division.

After a nervous, but strong start, Asfordby went ahead through Evie Mcdaid as the whole team performed their individual responsibilities to the letter.

Lauryn A forced her way into the starting line-up after impressing in training and lined up alongside Ella W in defence. Both showed did well to break up the AFC pressure.

The midfield of Ruby A, Hope M and Evie M all dictated the play in what was a more defensive role for them, while also attacking when possible.

At 1-0 it was still tense, but Erin Baker slotted home in the bottom right corner of the net to calm the nerves.

Amateurs brought on Millie G and Sophie V, to replace the tired Ruby A and Alice.

Both Alice and Sophie T had gone close, but it took a moment of brilliance form Sophie Varley, aka ‘Vardy’, to receive the ball in the box from Hope M and bury a low shot into the corner to clinch the win.

A last-minute penalty save from goalkeeper Leah Scallon confirmed their dominance and capped a player-of-the match performance after making many saves in an assured performance.

Unbeaten Asfordby have a welcome weekend off from league action and take up ball girl duty at the Notts County Ladies’ Women’s Super League match against Chelsea Ladies at Meadow Lane on Sunday.
