Melton’s Hamilton Tennis Club is up and running again following an eight-week closure because of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Club members were allowed back on court on Friday providing they adhere to strict guidelines, but the clubhouse will remain closed and is not likely to reopen until mid-July at the earliest.

Club chairman Gordon Hughes said: “We have conducted and completed a risk assessment and taken actions as required.”

“Our absolute goal is to ensure all our members stay safe within our environment and do not pass any infections on to fellow members. We are following stipulation from the Government and taking guidance from the Lawn Tennis Association.”

He also said it was a great time to join the club as it is one of the few sports the Government are allowing people to play.

“We would welcome new members. Tennis is a great sport at this time as you can social distance and after weeks of being in total lockdown many people will be looking to get more active again.”

In order to comply with the guidelines only four of the club’s six courts will be available and an online booking system has been set up.

Only singles play will be allowed except for members of the same household who can play doubles.

Members will have to bring their own balls and use gloves when handling them.

Players are asked to respect social distancing at all times. As the club house will remain closed with no access, this means there will be no court lighting, toilets or any food and drink facilities. A first aid station has been set up adjacent to the defibrillator unit.
