X-Men and Juno star Elliot Page has come out as transgender - read his statement

Elliot Page has announced that he is transgender.

The 33-year-old actor, who rose to fame in comedy Juno, released a statement on a number of social media platforms, stating: “I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot.”

What did Elliot Page say?

In the candid post Page revealed the difficulties he overcame in coming out and the struggles of those in less privileged positions to them.

He wrote: “The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared,” he said.

“I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes’ and of violence.

“To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture. The statistics are staggering.

“The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences.”

Addressing the trans community, Page said he will “do everything I can to change this world for the better”.

Page, who is married to choreographer Emma Portner, added: “I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer.

“And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.”

The actor, who has frequently spoken out about LGBT issues, signed the letter off by saying: “All my love, Elliot.”

What films is Elliot Page famous for?

Elliot Page made his debut in film in 1997, appearing in Pit Pony adn its subsequent TV series.

Page’s career in the early noughties would be defined by roles in cult TV series Trailer Park Boys and ReGenesis.

In 2005 he would receive widespread praise for his role in thriller Hard Candy, starring as Hayley Stark, a teenager who lures and kidnaps a paedophile.

Two years later Page would enjoy breakout success in offbeat comedy Juno. Following the life of a teenager who becomes pregnant and wrestles with the future of her unborn child.

For his performance, Page received Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Critics' Choice Awards, a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award nods.

He would become a familiar face to fans of the X-Men superhero franchise, appearing as Kitty Pryde in the Last Stand and Days of Future Past.

Page also played a key role in Christopher Nolan thriller Inception, appearing as dream architect Ariadne.

In recent years Page has earned recognition for his performance as Vanya Hargreeves in Netflix drama The Umbrella Academy. Vanya, also known as Number 7, is part of a family of superheroes, though she doesn’t possess any apparent supernatural abilities herself.
