Leicestershire County Council took the action on Station Lane because the bridge - where only vehicle can pass through at a time - needs to be repaired.

Trevor Pendleton, cabinet member for highways and transport at County Hall, told the Melton Times: “Following a road traffic collision, the bridge on Station Lane, Asfordby has been damaged.

“Whilst we assess the situation, temporary traffic lights have been installed to protect the highway and its users.

“Following this assessment, repairs to the bridge are a high priority and will commence as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Leicestershire Police said it had not been notified about any collision on the bridge.
