Bernard Booth (65) was presented with a long service certificate by Mayor of Melton Jeanne Douglas this week and also received some gift vouchers from the council.

Bernard, who worked for the council’s grounds maintenance team, was also presented with a television after his former workmates clubbed together to buy it for him.

Bernard, who is originally from Hose and now lives in Melton, officially retired from the council in February for health reasons.

He told the Melton Times he missed his former work colleagues but felt proud to receive his long service certificate and thanked the council and his former workmates for his gifts.

Bernard worked for Severn Trent Water for more than 20 years before working for the council and his retirement came about a week short of 50 years of work.
