Schoolboy's running challenge pays for life-saving equipment for children

An eight-year-old boy has completed a month-long challenge to raise hundreds of pounds for life-saving equipment for his school.

Bruno Battams, who is in Year 4 at Waltham-on-the-Wolds Primary School, ran a mile every day in October in a bid to help keep children at his school and the associated pre-school safer.

He initially set out to raise £340 to buy three wall-mounted LifeVac anti-choking devices, for the school and preschool, and a travel kit which can be taken on school trips.

His mum, Kitty, told the Melton Times: "The response from the community was incredible, and with everyone’s generosity, Bruno was able to more than double his target, raising £808 in total.

“This allowed him to extend his goal and fund first aid training for pupils at both the primary school and pre-school.

“We felt it was a brilliant way to help children gain confidence and learn how to respond if someone needs help, potentially a skill that could one day save a life.

“We are so proud of Bruno’s determination, kindness, and commitment to helping others.”

Choking is a leading cause of accidental death in young children, and the LifeVac is a simple, non-invasive suction device that can be used when standard choking rescue techniques fail.

“Bruno wanted to make sure his school had this extra layer of protection in place should an emergency ever occur,” added Kitty.

“What started as a simple idea to keep his school friends safe has grown into something that will benefit every child and teacher in the school community.”

The first aid sessions will be run by Leicestershire Mini First Aid – go to www.leicester.minifirstaid.co.uk for details.
