Former Melton Mowbray student wins Commonwealth Games gold medal

Former Brooksby Melton College student Sophie Hahn described the feeling as ‘very special’, after she scorched to a Commonwealth Games gold medal last night (Monday).

Sophie, who is 29, won the T38 100m at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, in a major return to form.

It was a wonderful moment which came eight years on from her first Commonwealth gold on Australia’s Gold Coast.

“The crowd really got behind me and I just felt that I had to focus,” said Sophie, who studies at Loughborough University.

“This is very special – it’s been a long time since I last won a Commonwealth Games back in 2018.

“This means a lot to come here in a home Games and to win.”

Sophie, who has cerebral palsy, competes in the T38 sprint event, a sports classification for athletes with coordination impairments.

She has struggled for form since winning a gold medal in the T38 100m at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Her victory in Glasgow completed a medals clean sweep for British athletes, with Welsh runner Olivia Breen second and England’s Maddie Down third.

Sophie told TNT Sports after the race: “I’m absolutely over the moon. Don’t get me wrong, I was very nervous coming into the games.

”I just thought, this is going to be tough, you have just got to go out, execute and just got to kick, kick, kick and to come away and just cross the line first. I am like, 'what just happened'?

”I feel like it is all tunnel vision, it is almost like you are in your own thoughts, it’s you against you, it doesn’t matter your surroundings."
