Firefighters respond after horse falls into a ditch near Melton

Firefighters have today (Monday) come to the aid of a horse after it fell into a water-filled ditch at Wymeswold.

An alert was sounded shortly before noon to the incident, which happened on Wide Lane in the village.

A crew from the Birstall fire station and a specialist technical rescue team from the city’s Southern Station responded to the call.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The initial call reported that a horse had fallen into ditch full of water and was unable to get out,

“Upon arrival, the incident was confirmed as a horse in a ditch and lying down in 17 inches of water.

“The technical rescue crew is currently formulating a rescue plan and the horse has been tethered initially for safety purposes.

“A vet has been requested in case the horse has injured itself.”
