Sharon Brown, landlady of The Grapes pub in the town, is co-ordinating the project with help from John Batty and Diane Dale.

Sharon, whose pub is temporarily closed due to coronavirus restrictions, said: “We will be taking out Christmas food hampers to people suffering with mental health, elderly people who might be isolated and those who are redundant or furloughed from their job.

Residents have made donations of Christmas shopping, food or vouchers for us to use and we’ll take this all out just before Christmas.”

The work continues what Sharon and her colleagues did earlier in the pandemic when they delivered food and provisions to isolated people, the elderly, unemployed and furloughed workers.

Last Christmas, Sharon and her family collected donations and took food and goody bags to homeless people, who this year are being housed in hotels and bed and breakfasts by the council.

As she prepares for this year’s festive SOS deliveries, Sharon added: “If people know someone who is struggling don’t hesitate to message us.

“A big pat on the back is due to residents who donate and to Sarah Cox at the Melton Learning Hub, who has also helped.”

Food and provisions can also be dropped off at The Grapes and vouchers can be posted through the door of the pub.
