Bike racer's family make emotional appeal after insurers refuse pay-out

The wife of a Melton Mowbray motorbike racer who was tragically killed three months ago is with ‘a very heavy heart’ appealing for public donations to support her family after a life insurance policy failed to pay out.

Dan Ingham, who was 33, was fatally injured during a qualifying session at the Isle of Man TT Races in May, devastating Helayna and their young children, Joey and Phoebe.

Despite taking out life insurance covering his racing career to protect his family ‘technicalities surrounding the circumstances of his death’ has prompted the insurers to refuse paying them anything.

Helayna said: “On top of losing my amazing husband, I am now facing the possibility of losing our forever home - my children’s home.

"The home Dan and I worked so hard to build, where we have made so many memories together.”

An online fundraising page was launched shortly after Dan’s death but Helayna said: “Unfortunately, that support has only provided some immediate security, and I am now facing the much bigger worry of how we secure our long-term future and keep our home.

“I never imagined I would have to ask for help like this, and it is incredibly difficult for me to do.

"But my priority now is Joey and Phoebe, and doing everything I can to protect their home and their future.

“So, with a very heavy heart, I have set up a new GoFundMe to help us through this incredibly difficult time.”

Helayna recently returned to the Isle of Man to take part in a memorial event to pay tribute to Dan – watched by hundreds of bike riders, marshals and fans, she carried his ashes on a lap of the course where he loved competing.

Dan had competed at on the famous Mountain Course for a decade after making his debut in 2016 in the Manx Grand Prix.

He graduated to the iconic Isle of Man TT Races and celebrated a number of podium place finishes before achieving a lifelong ambition by winning the 2024 Senior Manx Grand Prix.

"Three months ago, our lives were changed forever when we lost Dan,” Helayna said.

“These have been the hardest three months of our family’s lives, and unfortunately, things aren’t getting any easier.”

She says the initial fundraising page ‘helped enormously with the ongoing bills and the immediate financial pressure of trying to keep our lives going without Dan’ and she thanked everyone who contributed.

The lack of life insurance funds leaves the family in a very difficult position and they are grateful for any help people can give them.

"If you are able to donate, no matter how big or small, we would be incredibly grateful,” Helayna added.

“And if you aren’t able to donate, simply sharing our fundraiser could make a huge difference.

“I know times are difficult for everyone, and I don’t take a single donation, share or kind message for granted.

“Thank you for continuing to support me, Joey and Phoebe as we try to navigate a life we never imagined having to live.”
