Melton woman aims to show how exercise helps people with Parkinson's
A former Melton Times journalist and her daughter are teaming up to raise money for Parkinson’s UK next month.
Jan Jackson was diagnosed with the disease more than 15 years ago and was determined to stay active to help slow its progression.

To support the work of Parkinson's UK, Jan and her daughter Jessi are taking part in the charity’s Walk for Parkinson’s in Nottinghamshire on Saturday, July 4.
It is described as a neurological disorder which damages parts of the brain over a period of years and causes symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, and slow movement.
Jan said: “Since being diagnosed I've learned that staying active is one of the most important ways I can help manage the condition.
“Exercise has played a huge part in helping me stay strong, maintain my independence, and keep on top of the challenges that Parkinson's brings.
“My daughter Jessi and I have signed up to complete the 6-mile fundraising walk. While the distance will be a challenge, I feel determined and ready to take it on.
“Throughout my journey, I have experienced both difficult days and moments of determination, and I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and organisations such as Parkinson's UK.
“Parkinson’s is a condition that affects every part of daily life and brings challenges that many people never see.
"By donating, you'll be helping the charity continue its vital work and support those affected by this condition.
“Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a real difference. Thank you to those who have already donated and helped Parkinson's UK improve the lives of people living with disease.”
Those taking part in the Nottinghamshire walk can choose between a 1.9 mile or 6.1 mile route.
Both start by Thoresby House and go around woodlands and the deer park with a mix of terrains including tarmac and fields.
During the summer months the charity organises walks at various venues throughout the UK. Last year the Nottinghamshire walk raised £22,000.
All funds raised across the Walk for Parkinson’s 2026 series will support the charity’s Nurse Appeal and the vital work of Parkinson’s health and care specialists.
