New teaching block and theatre building takes shape at Melton school
Pupils and staff at Melton’s Long Field Spencer Academy are excited to see how quickly their new school building is going up.
Builders started on site, on Ambleside Way, last November, with the multi-million-pound project set to herald a major expansion of the town secondary school.

The first phase sees the construction of a large two-storey building to house 10 new classrooms, eventually enabling an extra 300 students to study at Long Field.
The new building will also include a theatre with 260 seats, drama studio, an intervention area, a ‘sky-lit’ art department and new spaces for music and textiles studies.
It is anticipated that this part of the development will be completed by next Easter.
There is also a second phase to upgrade the existing older building to include three new science labs, a brand new design and technology workshop. a new prep room, a makeover of the canteen and a new food room.
This phase of work is expected to be finished in time for pupils to be able to use it in the autumn term for 2027.
Principal Chris Haggett said: “The new building seems to be going up very quickly. Everyone is excited to see it all taking shape.”
Pupils and staff have taken the opportunity to tour the site as the building work goes on.
There are currently 900 students aged 11 to 16 at Long Field and the new teaching block will eventually take that number up to 1,200 with pupils numbers being increased gradually to give the school time to adapt.
