Coach company’s May Day festival parking cancelled after complaint

A parking ticket slapped on a Melton Mowbray travel company’s coach at Saturday’s May Day Festival in the town has been cancelled after the firm complained.

G&G Travel, which has an office in the Bell Centre to give information on the day trips and tours it runs, had their bus parked on High Street at the event to promote its business.

The town centre was closed off to traffic with May Pole Dancing, live music and market stalls set up in and around Market Place.

But civil enforcement officers from Leicestershire County Council issued a £70 parking ticket to staff because it was considered to be flouting traffic regulations.

Gemma Hill, a director with G&G Travel, told the Melton Times: “We are trying to support the town and then this happens so it is very disappointing.”

Melton BID manager, James Colclough, who helped organise the May festival with Melton Mowbray Town Estate, said the enforcement officers should have used common sense before issuing the parking ticket.

"G&G Travel have taken a pitch as part of the event and the coach has been very popular with kids and families,” James said.

"I fully understand if these are regulations not to park a coach here but the enforcement officers could have just given some advice to the company and resolved it that way.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council told the Melton Times: “We can confirm that the PCN given to the G&G coach over the weekend has been cancelled.

“We’ll also be working with Melton BID on our parking procedures to make sure that vehicles exempted for events are not issued in future.”
