Teenager given annual award for outstanding progress at Melton Learning Hub

An impressive teenager has been announced as the winner of an annual award for a student at Melton Learning Hub who has shown outstanding progress.

Melton Mowbray Rotary Club, which selects The Tony Field Award, gave it this year to 16-year-old Lesta Brown, stating that he ‘is proof that when a young person finds their confidence, their potential becomes limitless’.

Maggie Wilson visited the learning hub, which is on Burton Road, to present the award to Lesta alongside the centre’s manager Lucie Larke.

The hub, which is 20 years old, provides vocational and educational opportunities to young people who find learning challenging in a mainstream school setting.

The citation for the award reads: “Lesta came to us at the middle of Year 9 as a shy 13‑year‑old who lacked motivation and confidence, and was unsure about what the future might hold for him.

“Over time, he has grown noticeably in his practical abilities and overall maturity, becoming far more willing to get involved, follow instructions, and take on hands‑on tasks with increasing independence.

“His confidence has developed steadily, and he now approaches practical work with a positive attitude and a clear sense of responsibility.”

It adds: “Lesta is proof that when a young person finds their confidence, their potential becomes limitless - and his future is only just beginning.

"He is fully deserving of the award being given to him.

“His journey shows what can happen when determination meets opportunity, and he should be incredibly proud of how far he has come.”
