Children urged to take part in summer reading challenge at Melton Library
Children aged four to 12 are being urged to take part in a summer reading challenge at Melton Mowbray Library with everyone getting free entry to two of Leicestershire’s biggest tourist attractions.
Libraries across the county are hosting the event with youngsters encouraged to borrow library books or eBooks, collect stickers and rewards, and work towards completing six reading goals.

The challenge is being run on a ‘Read to the Beat’ theme to celebrate the joy of music, with children Children asked to enjoy the link between music and storytelling, including rhythm, self-expression, and creativity.
Every child who joins the Summer Reading Challenge will also get free entry to Bosworth Battlefield and 1620s House and Garden – all children need to do is take along the ‘Read to the Beat’ booklet alongside a paying adult.
Councillor Kevin Crook, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for culture and heritage, said: “Challenges like this are a fantastic way to inspire children to enjoy reading throughout the holidays, and we’re pleased our libraries will be hosting events and activities to help make it a success.
“I know that every year we do this we see thousands of children borrowing hundreds of thousands of books.
"With this year being the National Year of Reading, this brilliant initiative is a great gateway for children to uncover, or rediscover their love of reading and I’m looking forward to so many of our young people benefitting again.”
Last year, 7,363 children took part in the challenge, borrowing more than 181,000 books.
Children can sign up either at a local library to earn stickers towards a medal for completing the challenge, or sign up digitally to get digital rewards.
The colourful illustrations for the challenge have all been created by award-winning author and illustration, Harry Woodgate, and the challenge is delivered by The Reading Agency, who have partnered this year with Universal Music UK. The Summer Reading Challenge is a key part of the government-led National Year of Reading.
It goes on through to September 12 and there is also a dedicated mini challenge available for babies and toddlers aged up to three.
