Hundreds of knitted and crocheted poppies form part of Asfordby Remembrance festival

Hundreds of knitted and crocheted poppies will form part of a Remembrance Poppy Festival at Asfordby’s All Saints’ Church.

Children from Asfordby Hill Primary School and the village Brownies group have also contributed photographs, artwork and poetry for a display, which opens to the public on Friday.

Organisers have also been compiling an information folder on every local person who lost their life in the world wars to keep their memory alive for future generations.

Jill Bird, from All Saints, said: “After putting a request on Facebook for help, we have had over 1,000 knitted or crochet poppies donated to the church to enable us to create a poppy display.

“In addition to the poppy display, we will also be exhibiting photographs from our archives showing all aspects of village life.

"We have also created a history board and details of the service personnel and civilians who lost their lives and we are being further supported by Asfordby Hill Primary School and Asfordby Brownies, with artwork and poetry which will also be on display.”

The church will be open for the festival from 3pm to 7pm on Friday and 10am to 3pm on Saturday, when a coffee morning event will also be held between 10am and noon.

A service to commemorate Remembrance will be held in church from 10.30am to noon on Sunday, when parishioners can also enjoy the festival.

The exhibition and display will remain in All Saints’ Church through to Wednesday November 11 – Armistice Day – from 10am to 2pm.
