More than 250 young people will be performing at their new musical home in the centre of Leicester for the first time at a special concert this weekend (21 March).

The Leics Celebrate concert takes place at the previously empty Haymarket Theatre which is now alive with the sounds of young people playing music every weekend.

It’s a special event for the Leicestershire Music service - which has been inspiring young people since 1948 - as it also marks the launch of the Alumni Network.

Many alumni from across decades of music education are attending the concert, to hear the current crop of young musicians aged from five-years-old up to 19 play everything from steel pans to symphony orchestras.

Sarah Barton-Wales, Head of Leicestershire Music, said: “We are really looking forward to celebrating both past and present at our inaugural Haymarket Theatre performance. I would urge anyone who learnt with Leicestershire Music, or who supports us now, to come and see the wonderful work going on. Music really does change lives and we’d love our community to help us continue to do so for years to come.”

One notable alumni is Jonathan Vaughan, principal of the world-renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, who will be speaking at the event to underline the importance of music education for all.

He has credited the Leicestershire music service for his entire career, having performed in its orchestras from age nine. He is championing the Leicestershire Music campaign to make sure access for all remains a reality for future generations.

Joining the Alumni network gives members access to the archive, newsletters and the option to make a voluntary contribution to ensure more young people experience the joy of making music.

It’s also an opportunity for members to share their favourite memories, favourite music, and how the skills they learned helped them in their future careers.

Young composer Sam Nutter (16), will also be sharing what learning music through Leicestershire Music has meant to him at the event on Saturday.

Sam said: “I love composing, creating and performing! I first began composing at age 12 when I heard a movie soundtrack. I began playing violin at age 6, completing grade 8 at age 15, and now progressing on to teaching violin to others. I love hearing my music come to life with real players, it’s something truly special and one of the most magical moments.”

Attendees are invited to make a voluntary contribution to help the service provide more music making opportunities for young people.
