Melton Hockey: Third XI close in on league title

Melton Third XI moved within a win of claiming the East Midlands Division One title with a decisive performance on Saturday.

The Third XI welcomed second-placed Derwent to Burton Road for a top-of-the-table clash with both sides starting the day locked on points, but with Melton ahead on goal difference.

The home side recorded a convincing 3-0 win to move four points clear at the top going into the final round of matches this weekend.

They face a tough assignment at third-placed Buxton, but hold a big 15-goal advantage over Derwent.

The only other side who could catch Melton is fourth-placed Barton who trail by seven points, but have a game in hand.

* The Fourth XI fell to a heavy 9-0 defeat at Rugby and East Warwickshire on Saturday to remain second-bottom of South East Division Two.

The youthful team, bolstered by a few older heads, complete their season at home to Loughborough Town Sixth XI on Saturday (2pm).
