Uneven footpath levelled off next to St Mary's Church

Uneven paving stones near Melton Mowbray’s historic church were levelled off yesterday (Sunday) after long-standing complaints about the dangers they posed.

Work teams closed off Burton Street to carry out the repairs to the footpath which runs alongside St Mary’s Church – pavement slabs were re-set and tree roots pruned in a bid to prevent the problem happening again.

We took a walk along the path this morning and found that most of the paving stones had been flattened out but there were some which still protruded and need care to walk over for those who have mobility issues.

Some residents and town visitors told the Melton Times that they had tripped over the uneven pathway before the work was carried out and others said it required concentration to avoid those slabs which were uneven.

Leicestershire County Council’s work teams closed Burton Street to traffic so the task could be done safely and they also resurfaced the road before it reopened to traffic later yesterday.
