Coronavirus: Melton Livestock Market auctions limited to purchasers only

Only purchasers are allowed to attend animal sales at Melton Livestock Market today (Tuesday) following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s move last night to strengthen restrictions on movement in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Vendors have been told to deliver their animals but not to attend the auctions at the Scalford Road market.

A statement from Melton Mowbray Market reads: “Following the Prime Minister’s announcement The Livestock Auctioneers Association have been in discussions with DEFRA.

“Market CAN continue but ONLY PURCHASERS are allowed to attend.

“Vendors must drop cattle/sheep off and leave immediately (giving any clear instruction to the auctioneer).

“We understand if vendors do not wish to bring their sheep or cattle but it’s this way or no way.

“We would like to thank all of our customers for their continued support.”

The market took the decision last week to suspend all activities outside Tuesday animals sales and Friday farmers’ markets to ensure the food supply chain continues during the present crisis.
