Melton Mowbray Tennis Club mixed first team slip up

Leaders lose at Leicestershire B to rock promotion bid

Melton Mowbray Tennis Club’s Mixed first team, leading the way in Division 1A, slipped up in their bid for promotion back to the Premier League when they travelled for a tricky fixture at Leicestershire B and went down by a narrow 5-4 margin.

Skipper Ryan Parmar and Beth Lowe claimed two sets and just lost out in a third rubber tie break and Sarah Diver and teenager Zev Dewshi also weighed in with two sets, but just fell short of snatching the win.

The Mixed second team were fortunate in their Division 1B fixture when Kibworth pulled out at late notice and Melton were awarded the points.

The Mixed third team entertained David Lloyd thirds and went down by a 6-3 score with skipper Mark Ashman and the in form Jill Woods collecting two wins and Laura Fretwell and Thanee Sriwarin collecting one win.

At third pair David Owen and Ali Wildt battled bravely but were unable to add to the scoreline.

With one match remaining this defeat puts the team in trouble with the Roundhill team pulling out of the league.

So relegation may be a possibility, although the team may stay put with a new team promoted to take Roundhill’s position.

Off court, the club committee and members have been kept busy finalising the completion of the club’s new toilet block being constructed by local firm Griffin & Co Construction Ltd.

Club chairman Justin Horobin was keen to praise the efforts of vice chairman Peter Lovegrove and head coach Di Burdett, who have both been an integral part of this project and have given many valuable hours to this desperately needed asset for the members and visitors alike.

It is hoped that the facility will be up and running during October 2026.
