St Mary's Church activities morning that will celebrate Her Majesty's 90th birthday given royal seal of approval

Five weeks ago, church communications officer Phil Balding wrote to the Queen, informing her of an event which will celebrate her 90th birthday.

To his amazement he received a reply from the Queen’s lady-in-waiting on Friday which said she was touched to know that the church had planned such a special event, and that she hoped those attending have a very happy and memorable day.

Phil said: “The emphasis of our event on Saturday will be to have fun while commemorating The Queen’s special day.

“We’re inviting people to dress in red, white and blue and to bring a picnic for our indoor street party.”

Highlights of the morning, which runs from 10.30am until 1pm, will include two displays by military working dogs from the Defence Animal Centre at 10.50am and 11.30am, and there will be the opportunity for people to have a dance or two with dance group, Want2Dance, at 11.10am and 12.10pm.

Other attractions on the day will include displays of historic memorabilia, a visit from members of the Melton Royal British Legion, the chance to make hats and flags, balloon modelling, a royal quiz, storytelling and face painting.

Jelly and ice-cream will be served along with tea, coffee, cake and biscuits and the church will be showing a copy of a video taken by Ernie Pope, former landlord at the Half Moon, of the Queen’s visit to Melton in 1966.

Copies of a free 20 page colour souvenir booklet, sponsored by Melton Borough Council, will be handed out to visitors detailing the Queen’s visit to the town and the Queen’s letter to the church will be on display during the day for all to read.
