Melton’s number one Gus Hagger was involved in a real battle with Oliver Cadby-Linch, with long rallies being the order of the day with both players making a mockery of the wet and windy conditions that prevailed.

The first set lasted more than an hour and at 3-3 the game went into a tie-break which ended with Gus getting the upper hand and triumphing 10-8.

Sadly his opponent had strained himself during the tie break and was unable to continue, giving Gus the win.

This left his team mate Alfie Smith, who was making his debut, to try and clinch the match for the Melton lads.

Alfie started brightly and like Gus he clinched the first set on a tie-break by a 7-5 score line before his opponent Oliver Vesty hit back to level the match at 4-2.

The deciding match tie-break was a tight affair but Oliver just edged the win, running out the winner by a 10-7 margin.

With the doubles now to decide the match the visitors' number one was still unable to continue and Melton were awarded the match and the points.

The ladies' seconds entertained visitors Greenfields and shared the points in a 5-5 draw.

Laura McMullen and partner Jo Heggs paved the way with a superb maximum four sets including a nailbiting 7-5 7-5 win over the visitors' number one pairing.

The second pairing of Nicky Kennedy and Jill Woods battled bravely but just failed to nick a set that would have clinched the win.

The ladies' first team followed their opening match draw at Charnwood A with a terrific 7-3 away win at Carisbrooke A.

Strengthened by the return of county player Charlie Griffin the team were looking to get their first winter league win under their belts.

Charlie teamed up with Anna Reece and they proved the cornerstone of the win with three rubbers.

Skipper Jess Gadsby teamed up with Laura Cooper to weigh in with two wins to clinch the points.
