The exciting news was broken on Wednesday afternoon to those who had donated to a Crowdfunding appeal, launched last year, to raise £15,000 to guarantee TV coverage.

The programme will carry voiceover and expert commentary from Hugh Porter, long-time friend of the Classic, aided by Brian Smith.

Race director Colin Clews said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce this development, first of all to you and others who had confidence in us to achieve our aim, and backing this up by putting your hand in your pocket.

“To you, and all those others both in Britain and as far afield as Australia who helped us achieve (our) TV (goal), our heartfelt thanks. Without you we would never have made it!”
