Positive finish as Melton bob star Amelia Coltman finishes ninth at Winter Olympics

Melton skeleton bob ace Amelia Coltman ended her first Winter Olympic Games in style as one of three Brits to crack the top 10 last weekend.

In a freezing cold Cortina, she finished ninth in the competition, 2.3 seconds behind champion Janine Flock.

In skeleton, athletes barrel down a 1.2km track at close to 125kph four times in two days.

Coltman, 29, was frustrated with her first three runs but said: “I save my best for last.

“I wish I'd done four runs like that and maybe I'd be standing over there somewhere on the podium as well.

“I’m just pleased that I have positive feelings to take away from the race because it wasn't my best three runs before that, but I'm really happy to end on a positive note.”

Coltman was spotted at a talent ID day but grew up wanting to win Wimbledon.

With sporty parents – her dad, Gary, is a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist from 1986, and mum Theresa cycled in the women’s Tour de France – she was never going to give up her sporting dream after realising she was not going to make the cut.

They were both there to watch her cross the finish line on Saturday night and record her fastest time of the week, a 57.60s for a combined time of 3:51.32.

“I have learned don't be afraid to be myself,” she said after her Olympics bow.

“I think that is the main thing. Just be myself, enjoy it, don't worry about what other people think, essentially.

“It's just like, relax and let it happen, not put so much importance on it. I think the more you want it, the worse you do.

“The Olympics is this amazing thing but actually it is no different to any other competition, apart from the crowds.”

Coltman celebrated her top 10 finish with best friends Tabby Stoecker, who was fifth, and Freya Tarbit, seventh.

The trio also watched Matt Weston win gold in the men’s event on Friday, as he justified UK Sport’s £5.7m investment in the sport, before combining with Tabby to win the Mixed Team event gold too.
