Mixed bag for Melton Mowbray Tennis Club

The ladies’ second team whitewashed Leicester Forest East Thirds 8-0 at home, with first couple Laura Hayward and Jo Heggs in commanding form to lose just five games in their four sets. They were well supported by Beth Lowe and Sarah Medcalf who also notched a maximum.

* Melton’s ladies’ first team travelled to Carisbrooke with just two players due to illness and injuries.

But they still returned with a share of the spoils thanks to a fine performance from Ellie Jenkins and Laura Cooper.

Scores: E. Jenkins/L. Cooper won 6-0, 6-2; won 6-1, 6-2. Other sets conceded 6-0.

* The match involving the men’s first team was postponed, but the second team entertained Ashby Firsts and ran out 8-2 winners, each pair winning three sets.

The win sent Melton to the top of Division Four with Market Harborough and Birstall looking the likely challengers.

* The junior boys’ 14 and under team travelled to Market Bosworth for their Division 2B match and returned with a fine 8-0 win.

Twin brothers Ollie and James Roberts won both their singles before teaming up to take the doubles.

Scores: Oliver Roberts won 6-2, 7-5; James Roberts won 6-1, 6-1; Ollie/James won 7-6, 6-1.

The 12 and under boys’ played some good tennis in their Division Four game at Oadby before losing 4-2, with Adam Thornley collecting Melton’s win.

Scores: Adam Thornley won 6-2, 6-0; Billy Drewe lost 2-6, 2-6; Adam/Billy lost 2-6, 2-6.

* Off the court Melton Council are due to carry out work on trees around the Melton club’s courts, including in the area proposed for the club cabin.

There have been hold-ups, but the council has assured the club work will be done shortly. Once work has been completed, the club are looking to get the club cabin installed for players to shelter while waiting to play or during bad weather.

Club chairman Nigel Haynes is delighted with the support from the council and the sponsors who have helped the club establish itself, with membership up to 163.
