Mick beats rising star Sam to Melton Golf Club honour

SUNDAY, 1pm: One of Melton Golf Club's premier trophy competitions was decided this week when Mick Wilson and junior Sam Pollard contested the Muir Cup final.

A total of 57 members of 0 to 16 handicaps had entered the singles matchplay knockout competition.

Having beaten Geoff Townsend in the semi-finals, Sam was thrilled to play former club champion Mick Wilson who had a tough semi-final against Matt Hatton winning on the first extra hole.

In a closely-fought final. Mick's experience won the day from the rising star, winning 2-up with one to play to lift the Muir Cup for the fifth time and the first since 2001.

*The Muir Plate singles knockout was also decided, for handicaps 17 to 28.

A field of 32 players had begun the competition with Tony Robinson and David Gent reaching the final after beating Alan Hodgkinson and Steven Keast in the semis.

The pair played in strong winds in a nip and tuck contest, coming off the 18th hole all square. The match was decided on the first play-off hole with Tony taking the honours.

*A singles stableford attracted a strong field of 77 players in perfect conditions.

The overall winner was Sam Wright with 41 points, while Chris Donachie won Division One with 38 points from runner-up Mezz Watchorn (37).

Division Two winner was Steve Newman (39) and runner-up was Andrew Grewcock (37). Gavin Baxter won Division Three with 39 points, a point ahead of runner-up Craig Parsons.

Twos sweep: John Harvey, Phil Curtis, John Millar, Toby Pendlebury, Jack Inguanta.

*The men's midweek medal was won by category one player Greg Woolley with a nett 67 from Brendan Boyce (nett 69).

Tim Hackett and Phil Meade were third and fourth respectively both with nett 71 on count back.

Greg also took the best gross prize, shooting a 72. There were only two twos shot by Lee Wilson and Andrew Dul.

*The Seniors played their last home match of the season against Park Hill, winning 4 to 3

Melton winners: Peter Maine/Sid Freeman 2 and 1, Frank Williams/Bob Parkinson 5 and 3, Richard Grieve/Denis Dayman 5 and 4, Ron Lecoyte/Dave Lander 2 and 1, Peter Branch/Ron Smith halved.

*The seniors' stableford was won by Mike Dempster with 32 points, and Paddy Doyle was second with 31 on countback.

*The ladies' friendly match at Park Hill was halved with the lady captain and vice-captain setting a good example.

Melton winners: captain Peggy Newton/Diane Orson 3 and 2, vice-captain Julia Brown/Elaine Shelton 4 and 3.

*As the competition season draws to a close, the ladies played a summer challenge stableford.

In a close competition, Janet Bentley won with 37 points, two ahead of Julia Brown with Diane Orson third on 34.

The ladies also played a EWGA medal on Sunday, Drina Terzza winning with nett 76.
