Melton tennis club gearing up for debut season

More than 30 pupils from Ab Kettleby, Scalford and Asfordby Hill Primary Schools took part, working at co-ordination and fun skills linked to tennis.

Club coach Charlie Griffin led the festival, assisted by Brent Horobin and teachers from the three schools as well as Melton and Belvoir sports development officer Clare Marlow.

Melton Mowbray Tennis Club is gearing up for their first season of competitive tennis at the new venue.

The club is believes SLM and Melton Council are now convinced the club can bring the unloved and unattended courts back to life and have allowed the club to have the courts professionally cleaned prior to repainting.

There has plenty of interest shown in the new club with youngsters attending the courts during the winter, while coaching for beginner and improver adults, and groups of all standards has been popular.

While the club has long-term ambitions it is very keen to encourage everyone to go along to the courts and play, whatever standard.

Club chairman Nigel Haynes and head coach Di Burdett are working to have the facility ready for its Open Day on Saturday.

There will be free sessions from 10am until noon for primary school children, and 1pm to 3pm for 11 years upwards and adults.

Coaches and club members will be there to help and all equipment supplied.

Brent Horobin said: “The club will work to encourage more of the community to take up the game of tennis, both young and old, particularly at a time when child obesity and dementia at the older age group is causing enormous problems for the NHS.”
