Melton Sailing Club junior takes Memorial Trophy honours

A TASTE of the Olympics came to Frisby on Saturday when the Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association and Melton Sailing Club hosted the Sail for Gold Regatta.

This Olympic-themed regatta was part of the LRYSA’s series of five Mayor’s Trophy events which take place between April and September with the trophies donated by the mayors of Nuneaton and Bedworth and Hinckley and Bosworth.

Conditions were challenging with a force 4 wind and sudden gusts as 22 boats lined up for the first race. The beat up the lake to buoys five and six was exciting with boats trying to set the best course and, at the same time, avoid hitting one another.

Lasers and Toppers battled it out as the fleet became scattered all over the lake.

In the second race the wind picked up and there were some spectacular capsizes, especially by the Omega and Laser 2000 as they tried out their spinnakers while attempting to improve positions.

The gusts were stronger by race three which meant the safety boats very busy attending to numerous capsized boats.

Melton Sailing Club junior Jacob Duce was the overall winner of the Matthew Fulham Memorial Trophy for advanced sailors, with clubmate Jamie Graham in third, Adam Rowlatt fifth and Niall and Jake Rennie sixth.

In the Mayor’s Trophy races, Luke Wadding came fourth and Joey Cavani finished eighth. Other Melton Sailing Club sailors taking part were Ellie Gallagher, Lauren Gallagher, Robert Saunt, Joseph Simpson and Olivia Torre.
