Melton RFC Seconds whitewash Nottingham Moderns

Nottingham Moderns had no answer to Melton's pack as the Seconds eased to a dominant 39-0 away win on Saturday.

Melton’s heavier pack gradually began to take control after an even start, and proved much more streetwise than their younger opponents who wanted an arm wrestle which they were always going to lose.

When Moderns were driven off their own scrum, Conboy moved the ball to Farrish who went over unopposed before converting his own score.

This set the pattern for the game as Melton drove the hiosts off another scrum, allowing Richard Meakin to capitalise to extend the lead to 12-0.

History repeated itself just before half-time as Meakin made it 17-0.

Melton were carrying and protecting the ball well and Moderns could not deal with the runs from Meakins, Greaves, Sims and Webster who made several breaks at first receiver.

Hayward was everywhere in support of the ball carriers and linked well with Conboy who returned for his first game in a while.

The visitors changed their plan for the second half and moved the ball wide quicker, allowing Forfar, Parton and Blagburn to see some ball.

From one attack a quick penalty saw Hayward outflank the defence to score.

Another quickly-taken penalty saw R. Meakin feed D. Meakin who nearly got over the line.

The next try was a little lucky as Moderns won a ruck and tried to clear their lines, but found Parton who bundled his way over from 15 metres and then added the conversion.

Substitute Chambers broke out of his 22, and the ball passed through several pairs of hand before fellow replacement Evans, in space on the wing, sprinted in from 40 metres.

Richard Meakin capped the scoring and his hat-trick with a strong run and touch down in the corner (39-0).

The final word must go to the second row pairing of Broughton and Martorano. The former got into nearly every ruck and maul, while Martorano caught all but one kick-offs and kept Melton moving forward with some deft little passes down the blind side.

Melton: Sims, Webster, D. Meakin, Broughton, Martorano, R. Meakin, Greaves, Hayward, Conboy, Farrish, Forfar, Freeston, Parton, Blagburn, Evans, Chambers.
