Melton Mowbray TC Ladies are off to a flier

Melton Mowbray Tennis Club’s Ladies’ First team got their Division One campaign off to a flier.

They snatched a dramatic 5-4 win over champions Loughborough Town Ladies.

Skipper Charlie Griffin and partner Laura Cooper lead the way with a superb maximum three wins which included a final-round clincher when they overcame the county pairing of Victoria Kettle and Lucy Croucher.

The second pairing of Ellie Jenkins and Sarah Diver collected one win.

Meanwhile, the third pairing of Jess Gadsby and Georgene Ashmore ensuring that the points stayed in Melton as they added a victory.

Results: C. Griffin and L. Cooper won 8-1, 8-5, 8-0; E. Jenkins and S. Diver lost 4-8, 4-8 and won 8-4; J. Gadsby and G. Ashmore lost 1-8, 6-8 and won 8-4.

The Ladies’ Second team, promoted to Group Two, also started their season brightly with a 6-3 win over a depleted Gynsill First team.

Like many clubs have reported, injuries to players during early practice sessions have been common and Gynsill, likely to be in the title race, were only able to put out two couples.

Skipper Laura Haywood and partner Samitra Fox lead the way with a fine maximum three wins.

Second pairing of Ellie Jenkins and Jill Woods weighed in with two wins and third pairing of Sarah Medcalf and Bethany Lowe collected one win.

Results: L. Haywood and S. Fox won 8-1, 8-4, 6-0; E. Jenkins and J. Woods won 8-5, lost 1-8 and won 6-0; S. Medcalf and B. Lowe lost 3-8, 6-8 and won 6-0.
