Melton cadets practise arms skills to further their shooting careers

Air Cadets from the 1279 Melton Mowbray Squadron, 2229 Loughborough Squadron and 2502 Hamilton Squadron developed their weaponry handling to allow them to safely use the L98A2 Cadet GP rifle, the next step up on their cadet target shooting careers.

The cadets were put through their paces on a specially designed course by Sergeant (ATC) Eric Severn and Flying Officer Daniel McGlynn RAFVR(T), who are both qualified skill and arms instructors.

All participants were required to take a Weapons Handling Test which helps prove if staff and cadets know how to carry, clean, hold and load their rifle.

Sergeant (ATC) Lynda Kinniburgh, a student on the course said: “It was a really tough course but I’m so glad I took part.

“It’s really rewarding when you manage to get the drills right and I’m looking forward to putting my new skills to the test on the range.

All cadets can now take part in wing and long range shoots.

Anyone who is aged 12 and in Year 8 or above at school, and is interested in seeing the wide range of activities on offer can visit the 1279 Melton Mowbray Squadron on a Tuesday or Thursday night from 7.15pm at the Cadet Centre, Asfordby Road.
