Melton and Belvoir schools win first Go-Ride Super Series

Stathern Primary School and John Ferneley College teams won both age group events at the Go-Ride Cycling Super-Series Final, hosted by Brooksby Melton College.

Mark Threlfall, a member of the British Triathlon Elite Multisport Squad, and Grace Garner, School Games Ambassador and UK Team Podium Ambition road cyclist, attended to inspire the young athletes and help with the award ceremonies.

Nine teams from across Leicestershire, Leicester City and Rutland, took part in the inaugural event, a mixed competition for Year 5 and 6, and Year 7 and 8 age groups.

Six school partnerships were represented in the Year 5 and 6 category which began with a cycle cross race, consisting of uphill and downhill routes.

Stathern, representing Melton and Belvoir, clocked the best time as the competition moved on to the Italian Pursuit race.

And the Vale of Belvoir school could not be beaten to ensure they took home the gold medals.

Runners-up were North West Leicestershire (Sir John Moore) who pipped third-placed North Charnwood (Outwoods Edge) on time difference.

The Year 7/8 class saw three partnerships compete over the same format.

Like their team-mates, John Ferneley clocked the quickest time in the cycle cross and then won a very competitive Italian Pursuit to take home the gold medals and cap a very successful day.

South Charnwood (Rawlins Academy) were second and Hinckley and Bosworth (Heathfield Academy) finished in third position.

The Spirit of the Games trophy was awarded to North Charnwood in the Year 5/6 competition, and Hinckley and Bosworth in the Year 7/8 competition.
